    Itinerary. We depart Inverness and cross the Black Isle before turning towards Dingwall, county town of Ross & Cromarty. A detour by Strathpeffer if any passengers joining there before we continue to Lochcarron, on the shores of beautiful "Loch Carron". We have a forty-minute stop in this village with its beautiful seaside location and pleasant café.

    View across Loch Kishorn of the road up the Bealach na Bà
    We leave Lochcarron and make a short detour to Ardarroch from where we get fine views of our mountain route (above). Thence to the Bealach na Bà - the Pass of the Cattle - which climbs to over 2,000' (>600m). This is the third-highest public road in Britain, and much more spectacular than its rivals in NE Scotland.
    The picture below shows the beginning of the road, picture to the right is a view looking back to Loch Kishorn.
    We stop at the summit of the road for breathtaking views - weather permitting! - across Raasay to the Isle of Skye. We commence our descent to Applecross Village.

    Please visit the Applecross Peninsula website for an overview of the area.

    We spend over an hour in Applecross village and spots nearby. Possibilities include:

  • Lunch at the The Potting Shed (slightly curious home page!). We drive you to the Potting Shed, or you can arrive there after an easy walk of about 2 miles;
  • Picnic lunch at many delightful spots by the shore or on the hills above;
  • A visit to the acclaimed Heritage Centre (entrance fee applies).

    A view north from the Applecross peninsula

    After our time at Applecross we take the low-level road north and then south-east to Shieldaig. A short stop in this picturesque little village and then we commence our return journey to Inverness.

    Suggested Walk. An easy walk of about 2 miles (3 km) and nearly all downhill. You pass through open ground; an area where native woodland is being re-established; and a wood of mature, well-spaced trees before arriving at the Potting Shed (lunch stop). After lunch the minicoach picks you up again at the Potting Shed or you can make a beautiful short tree-lined river walk to the sea and be picked up there.
